MM! in the US

2.25 million copies of the MM! The Movie DVD were sold coast-to-coast on the first day of release.  Not bad for a country where ABBA were not THAT big in the 70s.

The DVD was also top of the DVD sales chart during the all-important Christmas week - free publicity that might lead to further records.

16 December

ABBA Museum Future

Of course, the ABBA Museum is not going to be going from country to country forever. While there are short-term touring plans (at present there are rumours about London, the US and Barcelona - watch this space for ticket details and further info for a 2009 start), it needs a permanent home in the long run.

One such home could be a site next to the Gröna Lund amusement park in Stockholm (planning permission likely), a brand-new building that can be built to specification, of course, and that would not carry any of the restrictions imposed by the structure of the previously suggested building.

Mamma Mia! - More Scandinavian Success

More statistics have emerged to prove that Scandinavia still cannot get enough of anything Abba-related, even after all these years. Universal Music Norway received a staggering 500,000 advance orders for the Mamma Mia! DVD in that country (not bad for a land of around 4 million inhabitants), and Sweden followed the UK by making the film the best-ever selling DVD in its first week of release, with purchases of more than 250,000 copies in the first seven days.

In the Swedish cinemas, MM! so far has been seen by over 1.8 million people, another record, and it still is No. 4 at the box office, all those months after its release and although the DVD is out now.

ABBA Singstar tops the Swedish video games sales chart, ABBA The Albums is doing well still although it has just dropped out off the top ten. Finally, the best-selling music book is MM!.

Ola Brunkert Has Died

Ola Brunkert, who played the drums on all of ABBA's albums and accompanied the group on the 1977 and 1979/1980 tours, was found dead on the grounds of his home on the Spanish island of Majorca on Sunday. His death is not treated as suspicious, and it is assumed that he accidentally fell into a glass pane.

In addition to a number of colleagues, both Benny and Björn have expressed their shock and sadness. While Benny described the accident as "tragic," Björn commented, "I remember him as a good friend when we worked together in the 70s. He was a very creative musician who added a lot when we toured or recorded in the studio. The last time I saw him was at the opening of the Mamma Mia! tour in Madrid after I had not seen him for maybe 20 years. Although we were not seeing each other much in private, I do miss him as a friend from the tours and as a great and very creative musician. He was one of the best."

Ola Brunkert left two sons behind.
